Galvanizing is a process used to protect steel or iron from corrosion. It involves coating the metal with a layer of zinc. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, where the steel is immersed in a bath of molten zinc. This creates a metallurgical bond between the zinc and the iron, forming a protective layer.

The zinc coating serves two main purposes. Firstly, it acts as a physical barrier, preventing corrosive substances like moisture and oxygen from reaching the steel surface. Secondly, zinc is more electrochemically active than iron. This means that if the coating is scratched and the steel is exposed, the zinc will preferentially corrode (sacrificial protection), protecting the underlying iron from rust.

Galvanized steel is widely used in various applications due to its durability and resistance to weathering. Common uses include construction materials such as roofing, siding, and structural beams, as well as in the manufacturing of vehicles, appliances, and outdoor furniture. The process is cost-effective and significantly extends the lifespan of steel products exposed to the elements. Other methods of galvanizing exist, such as electrogalvanizing, which uses an electrolytic process to apply the zinc coating.
