galgangen

Galgangen is a historical term found in Norwegian, Danish and Swedish sources that describes a lane, street, or route associated with execution by hanging. The word is a compound of galg- meaning "gallows" and gangen meaning "the way" or "path," with orthographic variations across languages.

In medieval and early modern towns, a galgangen would be the way by which the condemned were led to the gallows, or a stretch of road near the execution site. The term sometimes appears in chronicles, travelogues, and local histories as a descriptive toponym rather than the name of a current place.

Contemporary usage is rare; galgangen is largely encountered in historical contexts and in discussions of punishment practices or local folklore.

In modern Nordic languages the concept persists in archaeological or museum contexts when describing execution sites, margins of old town walls, or public squares where punishment was carried out.
