Gaasimürgiga, often referred to as carbon monoxide poisoning, is a type of poisoning that occurs when carbon monoxide (CO) gas accumulates in your bloodstream to toxic levels. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced during the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials. This can occur from sources such as faulty furnaces, water heaters, stoves, fireplaces, and automobile exhaust.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can mimic those of other illnesses, making it difficult to diagnose. Early symptoms may include a dull headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. As the poisoning progresses, individuals may experience impaired judgment, loss of coordination, loss of consciousness, and eventually, death. The severity of symptoms depends on the concentration of carbon monoxide in the air and the duration of exposure.

Diagnosis typically involves measuring the level of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in the blood. Treatment involves removing the affected individual from the source of carbon monoxide exposure and administering 100% oxygen or hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help remove carbon monoxide from the blood more quickly.

Prevention is key to avoiding carbon monoxide poisoning. This includes ensuring proper ventilation of fuel-burning appliances, installing carbon monoxide detectors in homes and other buildings, and avoiding running vehicles in enclosed spaces like garages. Regular maintenance of heating systems and chimneys is also crucial.
