A gázhajó, often translated as gas ship or gas carrier, is a specialized type of ship designed for the maritime transport of liquefied gases. These vessels are crucial for the global energy market, enabling the movement of vital commodities such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The cargo is carried in a liquefied state at very low temperatures or under pressure, requiring robust and sophisticated containment systems.

The design of gázhajók prioritizes safety and efficiency. They typically feature multiple, heavily insulated tanks to maintain the cryogenic temperatures or pressure necessary for the cargo. Depending on the type of gas and its specific requirements, these tanks can be spherical (Moss-type), prismatic, or cylindrical. The hull structure is often reinforced to withstand the stresses associated with carrying such cargo and to provide an additional layer of protection.

There are several classifications of gázhajók based on the type of gas they transport and their design. LNG carriers, for example, are designed to transport natural gas liquefied at approximately -162 degrees Celsius. LPG carriers, on the other hand, transport gases like propane and butane, which can be liquefied at lower pressures and higher temperatures than LNG. Smaller vessels, often referred to as gas tankers, may be used for coastal or inland waterway transport of various liquefied gases. The construction and operation of these ships are subject to stringent international regulations to prevent accidents and environmental damage.
