A gázfényforrás, often referred to as a gas discharge lamp, is a type of electric light where light is produced by the passage of an electric current through an ionized gas, or plasma. This process is known as gas discharge. When a sufficient voltage is applied across the electrodes of a gas-filled tube, the gas within the tube becomes ionized, meaning electrons are stripped from the gas atoms. These free electrons then accelerate and collide with other gas atoms, exciting them to higher energy levels. As these excited atoms return to their ground state, they release energy in the form of photons, which we perceive as light.

The color and characteristics of the light emitted by a gázfényforrás depend on the type of gas used, the pressure within the tube, and the electrical conditions. Common gases used include noble gases like neon, argon, and xenon, as well as mercury vapor and metal halides. Different gases produce distinct spectra of light. For example, neon gas glows red, while argon typically emits a bluish light.

Gázfényforrások have a wide range of applications. They are used in decorative lighting, such as neon signs, as well as in more functional roles like streetlights, stadium lighting, and in scientific instruments. Their efficiency, lifespan, and specific spectral properties make them suitable for various purposes where traditional incandescent bulbs might be less effective or economical. Examples include fluorescent lamps, high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps like mercury vapor lamps and metal halide lamps, and specialized lamps for medical or industrial uses.
