Fültmirigy refers to the parotid gland, the largest of the salivary glands in humans and many other mammals. These glands are located on either side of the face, just in front of and below the ears. The parotid glands are composed of acinar cells, which are responsible for secreting the watery, protein-rich saliva. This saliva is transported through a duct system, most notably Stensen's duct, which opens into the mouth near the upper molars. The facial nerve runs through the parotid gland, making surgery in this area delicate due to the risk of nerve damage.

Common conditions affecting the parotid glands include infections like mumps, which causes swelling and pain in the glands. Other issues can involve the formation of stones within the salivary ducts, leading to blockage and discomfort, or tumors, which can be benign or malignant. The health and function of the parotid glands are essential for comfortable eating and overall oral health.
