Földolaj, also known as crude oil or petroleum, is a naturally occurring, yellowish-black liquid found in geological formations beneath the Earth's surface. It is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, primarily alkanes, cycloalkanes, and aromatic hydrocarbons, along with smaller amounts of other organic compounds containing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. Földolaj is formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient marine organisms that were buried under layers of sediment and subjected to heat and pressure.

The extraction of földolaj is typically done through drilling wells into underground reservoirs. Once extracted, it is transported via pipelines, ships, or trucks to refineries. At refineries, földolaj undergoes a process called fractional distillation, where it is heated and separated into different components based on their boiling points. These components, known as fractions, include gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, jet fuel, lubricating oils, and asphalt.

Földolaj is a vital resource for the global economy, serving as the primary source for transportation fuels and a key feedstock for the petrochemical industry. Petrochemical products are used to manufacture a vast array of everyday items, including plastics, synthetic fibers, fertilizers, and pharmaceuticals. However, the extraction, transportation, and combustion of földolaj have significant environmental impacts, including air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change, and the risk of oil spills. Consequently, there is a growing global effort to transition to renewable energy sources and reduce reliance on földolaj.
