Once the desired geometry is achieved, backfilling and compaction are performed, along with drainage and stabilization measures.

Techniques vary and use a range of heavy machinery, such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, wheel loaders, and dump trucks; for larger projects, scrapers or tunnel boring machines may be employed. The work aims to achieve specified earthworks volumes, grade, and slope stability, and often involves soil compaction testing and quality control to meet design requirements.

Safety and environmental considerations are central: slope stability to prevent cave-ins, dust and noise control, fuel and spill management, erosion control, and proper management of stockpiled materials. Compliance with local regulations, permits, and construction standards is typically required, and planning often includes considerations for traffic management and runoff.

Beyond construction, earthworks play a role in mining, land reclamation, and agricultural soil preparation in some contexts; skilled operators and thorough project planning are essential for efficiency and safety.
