The fylgjupróf was believed to be a way to determine the nature of one’s fylgja or to uncover hidden truths about a person’s fate, character, or future.

The test typically involved a series of rituals or observations, often centered around animals, particularly birds or cats. One common method was to observe the behavior of a bird, such as a crow or raven, which was thought to be a manifestation of the fylgja. If the bird behaved aggressively or showed signs of distress, it was considered an omen of misfortune or danger. Conversely, a calm or friendly demeanor might suggest protection or good fortune. Another practice involved placing a live animal, like a cat, in a confined space and interpreting its movements or reactions as clues about the person’s fate.
