Funkcionali is a term that emerged from philosophical discussions, particularly within analytic philosophy, to describe a particular approach to understanding mental states or other complex entities. The core idea behind funcionalism is that the nature of a mental state, or any functional system, is determined by its role or function within a larger system, rather than by its physical composition. In other words, what makes something a particular mental state, like pain, is not the specific physical stuff it is made of, but rather what it does – how it causes other mental states, how it influences behavior, and how it is caused by external stimuli.

This perspective contrasts with earlier theories of mind that might have linked specific mental states directly to specific physical brain states (identity theory) or viewed them as non-physical entities (dualism). Funcionalism suggests that a mental state could, in principle, be realized in different physical systems. For example, pain in a human brain, a computer simulation, or even an alien organism could all be considered instances of pain if they fulfill the same functional role. The focus is on the causal relationships and the operational characteristics of the state within its system. This approach has been influential in fields like artificial intelligence and cognitive science, as it provides a framework for understanding how complex functions can be implemented.
