Funkcionálok, often translated as functionals, are mathematical objects that map functions to scalars. In simpler terms, a functional takes a function as its input and produces a single number as its output. This concept is central to various fields of mathematics, including calculus of variations, functional analysis, and theoretical physics.

The most basic example of a functional is an integral. For instance, the integral of a function f(x) from a to b, denoted as $\int_a^b f(x) dx$, takes the function f(x) as input and returns a numerical value representing the area under its curve. Another common functional is the evaluation of a function at a specific point, which is sometimes called a point evaluation functional.

Functionals are crucial in optimization problems. The calculus of variations, for example, deals with finding functions that minimize or maximize certain functionals. This is analogous to finding the minimum or maximum of a standard function, but here the variables are themselves functions.

In functional analysis, the study of vector spaces of functions, functionals play a key role in defining norms and topologies. The dual space of a normed vector space consists of all continuous linear functionals on that space. These concepts are fundamental for understanding advanced mathematical structures and their applications.
