Fungiforma is a term that appears in more than one biological context, and its precise meaning depends on the field. The root is from Latin fungus meaning mushroom and forma meaning form or shape. In usage, the term is sometimes encountered as a descriptor for mushroom-shaped structures or, in some historical texts, as a genus name in taxonomy.

In anatomy, fungiforma refers to the fungiform papillae, a type of taste papilla on the tongue. They are dome-shaped or mushroom-shaped projections about 1–3 millimeters in diameter and are scattered across the dorsal surface of the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, with a higher density toward the tip. Each papilla typically contains a taste bud within a small depression at its apex and is innervated by chorda tympani fibers from the facial nerve for taste, with general sensation carried by the lingual nerve. Taste receptor cells within the taste buds detect sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami stimuli, sending signals to the brain via the gustatory pathways. Fungiform papillae contribute to the overall taste perception, particularly for stimuli detected at the tongue’s tip.

In taxonomy or mycology, Fungiforma has appeared as a genus name in some older or less established sources, but there is no widely recognized current record of a living fungal genus by that exact name in major databases. If encountered, it should be verified against authoritative taxonomic references, as it may be a synonym, a historical artifact, or a misspelling rather than a valid, accepted genus.
