In materials and consumer goods, fungalbased approaches include mycelium-based composites and leather substitutes. These materials use mushroom-forming fungi to grow networks of hyphae that bind agricultural waste into forms useful for packaging, insulation, or textiles. They offer potential advantages in sustainability, including reduced land use and lower energy requirements compared with some conventional materials.

In medicine and biotechnology, fungi produce a wide range of bioactive compounds, enzymes, and industrial products. Penicillin and other antibiotics originate from Penicillium and related molds; fungi are also used to produce enzymes for detergents, food processing, and medical diagnostics. Advances in genetic and fermentation technologies have expanded the role of fungi in drug development and industrial bioprocessing.

Safety and regulation are important considerations. Some fungi synthesize mycotoxins or trigger allergic reactions; product quality and contamination control are regulated by food, drug, and environmental agencies in various jurisdictions.
