The first funicular railway was built in 1863 in Lyon, France. It was designed by engineer Étienne M. de Montricher and transported passengers between the lower and upper parts of the city. Since then, funiculars have been built all over the world, with notable examples in cities like San Francisco, Budapest, and Valparaíso. While many funiculars are still in operation, some have been replaced by other forms of transport or have fallen into disuse.
