Fuktstat, meaning moisture status, is a term used to describe the current level of moisture in a material or its surrounding environment. In Swedish building and material science practice, it indicates how much water is present relative to the material’s properties and to ambient conditions, with implications for durability and performance.

Measurement and expression: Moisture content (MC) is typically expressed as a percentage of dry weight for solids such as wood, while relative humidity (RH) is used for air. Temperature and, in some cases, dew point are also considered. Instruments include pin-type and pinless moisture meters for solids and hygrometers or data loggers for air. For many materials, MC and RH are related through the material’s sorption characteristics and the current temperature.

Interpretation: A fuktstat outside safe ranges signals risk of damage. High MC or RH can promote rot, mold, corrosion, and dimensional changes; low moisture can cause cracking or embrittlement. The target fuktstat depends on material type, use, and environment, and is often guided by the concept of equilibrium moisture content (EMC).

Applications: Professionals use fuktstat assessments in construction, renovation, conservation, and storage to plan drying, ventilation, dehumidification, waterproofing, and quality control. Understanding fuktstat helps prevent moisture-related failures and informs maintenance schedules.

Relation to EMC: The fuktstat concept is linked to equilibrium moisture content, which describes the asymptotic moisture level a material reaches at a given temperature and humidity, based on its sorption isotherm. Safe fuktstat usually means aligning with EMC to minimize damage.
