Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the common fruit fly or vinegar fly, is a species of fly belonging to the family Drosophilidae. It is a small insect, typically about 3 millimeters in length, with red eyes and a tan to brownish body. Fruit flies are ubiquitous worldwide and are frequently found in households, restaurants, and areas where ripe or fermenting fruit and vegetables are present.

These flies are attracted to sugary substances, including ripe and decaying fruits and vegetables, as well as alcoholic beverages and fermented foods. They lay their eggs on these substrates, and the larvae, or maggots, feed and develop within them. The life cycle from egg to adult can be completed in as little as 7 to 10 days under optimal conditions.
