Frostkontroll, or frost control, is the practice of preventing or reducing frost damage to crops, equipment, and infrastructure during cold weather. It encompasses a range of methods used in outdoor agriculture, greenhouse cultivation, and industrial settings to protect yield and product quality in regions prone to frost events.

Field techniques include sprinkler irrigation (flooding) to supply latent heat as ice forms, wind machines or fans that mix warmer air from above with colder air near the surface, and the use of heaters or portable flame devices. Protective coverings such as row covers and mulch, along with windbreaks, reduce exposure to freezing temperatures. In protected environments, frostkontroll relies on climate control systems: heating (gas, electric, or oil), thermal screens or double glazing, greenhouse insulation, and controlled humidity to prevent freezing of plant tissue.

Effective frostkontroll depends on accurate weather forecasting, real-time monitoring, and timely activation of protection measures. Sensors that track temperature near the canopy and frost alerts help growers decide when to deploy resources. Some strategies combine multiple methods to balance protection with energy use and environmental impact, and to minimize disruption to growth cycles.

Applications include fruit crops such as apples, peaches, citrus, and berries; vineyards; vegetables grown in the open or under protection; and nurseries. The approach varies with climate, crop stage, and market requirements, and it often involves cost–benefit analysis and risk assessment.
