Frameformaatit is the Finnish term used to describe the set of specifications that govern how a single video frame is encoded, stored, transmitted, and displayed. In practical terms, a frameformaatit includes properties such as resolution and aspect ratio, the pixel format and color space, bit depth and chroma subsampling, the frame rate, and whether frames are progressive or interlaced, along with any relevant metadata.

Frameformaatit are used throughout video production and distribution to ensure compatibility across devices and pipelines. They can be described independently of a file container (a frame- or in-memory format) or as part of a file container's metadata (such as a MP4 or MKV track).

Key components include: resolution (width x height in pixels); aspect ratio; pixel format (for example, YUV 4:2:0, 4:4:4, or RGB); color space (Rec. 709, Rec. 2020); bit depth; chroma subsampling; frame rate (24–120 fps); interlacing; and timing information such as timecode.
