A fovea is a small pit or depression in a bone or organ. The term is most commonly associated with the fovea centralis, a vital part of the human eye. Located in the center of the macula, which is itself the center of the retina, the fovea is responsible for sharp, detailed central vision.

This area is uniquely adapted for high visual acuity. It contains a very high concentration of cone photoreceptor cells, which are sensitive to color and function best in bright light. The other retinal cells are displaced to the sides, allowing light to strike the cones directly. This structural arrangement minimizes scattering of light and enables the precise vision required for activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

In anatomy, the term fovea can also refer to other depressions. For example, on the femur bone, there is a fovea on the head of the femur where a ligament attaches. Despite sharing the same name, these bony foveae are structurally and functionally distinct from the fovea in the eye, serving primarily as points of attachment for soft tissues. The fovea centralis remains the most significant example due to its critical role in human sight. Damage to the fovea, often through macular degeneration, can lead to a severe loss of central vision.
