It denotes a non-nominal state in which the presence of a fault affects performance or operation, potentially threatening safety or reliability. A fault can be latent or active, and a fault state may persist even if the system continues to function thanks to compensating measures.

In practice, the concept is central to reliability engineering and safety analysis. The distinction between a fault and a fault state is common: a fault is the underlying cause, while the fault state is the observable condition or behavior resulting from that fault. Methods such as failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA) are used to identify possible fault states and their consequences, and to design mitigations.

Detection and response are key aspects of managing fault states. Modern systems monitor for anomalies and, upon detecting a fault state, raise alarms, isolate faulty subsystems, or switch to protective or safe modes. Redundancy, fault-tolerant design, and watchdog mechanisms aim to prevent a fault state from leading to a full failure.

In industrial automation, sensor faults may cause a controller to enter a safe state. In consumer electronics and software, fault states are often indicated by fault codes or error LEDs, prompting corrective actions.
