Fototest is a term used in photography and imaging to describe a structured set of tests and sample images used to evaluate the performance of cameras, lenses, displays, or imaging pipelines. The aim is to assess color fidelity, tonal response, resolution, sharpness, noise, and dynamic range under controlled conditions.

Typical fototests employ standardized targets such as color charts, grayscale steps, resolution patterns, and edge charts. These targets are photographed or displayed under defined lighting, with repeatable camera settings and processing workflows. The resulting data are analyzed with software to quantify metrics including color difference (Delta E), gamma and luminance response, sharpness, and noise levels.

Applications include product testing by manufacturers, independent reviews, calibration workflows for displays and printers, and educational demonstrations of imaging performance. Fototests may be designed for specific devices (cameras, lenses, sensors) or for broader system evaluations, such as a complete imaging pipeline from capture to display.

Workflow typically involves planning the test scene, controlling lighting, capturing RAW or linear data, applying consistent white balance and sharpening, and performing objective analysis. Standards often reference color management practices, color charts, and measurement procedures, allowing comparisons across devices and over time.

Limitations include reliance on controlled conditions that may not reflect real-world use, potential variability in processing, and the need for careful interpretation of metrics.
