Fotopaperi is a Finnish term that translates to "photographic paper." It refers to a specialized paper that has been coated with a light-sensitive emulsion, typically containing silver halide crystals. This coating allows the paper to record images when exposed to light, either through direct contact with a negative or through projection by an enlarger.

The process of developing images on photographic paper involves a series of chemical baths. Developers convert the exposed silver halide crystals into metallic silver, forming the visible image. Stop baths halt the development process, and fixers make the image permanent by removing any remaining unexposed silver halide crystals. Wash baths then remove residual chemicals, ensuring the longevity of the print.

Photographic papers come in various types, differing in their surface finish (e.g., glossy, matte, pearl), base material (e.g., resin-coated or fiber-based), and contrast grade. Contrast grades determine how the paper responds to different levels of light intensity, allowing photographers to fine-tune the tonal range of their prints. Historically, fotopaperi was a fundamental material for producing physical photographs, though its use has declined with the rise of digital photography.
