Foszfonátok is the Hungarian term for phosphonates. Phosphonates are a class of chemicals that contain a carbon-phosphorus bond. They are structurally related to phosphates but possess a direct carbon-phosphorus linkage, which makes them more stable and resistant to hydrolysis. This stability is a key reason for their widespread industrial and biological applications.

In industrial settings, phosphonates are primarily used as scale and corrosion inhibitors, particularly in water treatment systems for cooling towers, boilers, and desalination plants. Their ability to bind to metal ions, such as calcium and magnesium, prevents the formation of mineral scale that can impede heat transfer and clog pipes. They also form protective layers on metal surfaces, inhibiting corrosion.

Phosphonates also find use as chelating agents, detergents, and dispersants. In agriculture, they can act as fertilizers and plant growth regulators. Certain phosphonate derivatives are also employed in pharmaceuticals, most notably as bisphosphonates, which are a crucial class of drugs used to treat bone diseases like osteoporosis and Paget's disease by inhibiting osteoclast activity.

The environmental fate and impact of phosphonates are subjects of ongoing research. While generally considered to have low toxicity, their persistence in the environment can be a concern, and methods for their removal from wastewater are being developed.
