The name fosforkilde is derived from Old Norse, with "fos" meaning waterfall and "kilde" meaning spring, reflecting the area’s abundant water sources, including a small waterfall that feeds the local aquifer.

The first written record of fosforkilde dates back to the 13th century, when it was mentioned in a land registry as a modest farmstead. Over the centuries, the village evolved into a modest fishing and farming community, with most inhabitants engaged in salmon fishing and oat cultivation. In the early 20th century, a small hydroelectric plant was installed on the nearby waterfall, providing electricity to the village and surrounding farms.

Today, fosforkilde has an estimated population of 150 residents. The village is known for its traditional wooden architecture, with many houses dating from the 1800s still standing.
