Forvarming, or preheating, is the intentional warming of a device, component, material, or system before it is placed into normal operation or processing. The goal is to raise the temperature to a level where performance, safety, or reliability is improved. Preheating is used across a broad range of industries and applications.

In mechanical engineering and transportation, preheating reduces cold-start wear and emissions. Engine preheating uses devices such as block heaters or glow plugs to raise the motor temperature before starting in cold weather. Preheated cabin air or engine oil improves lubrication and reduces starter current. In power generation and industrial settings, preheating fuels or combustion air can enhance efficiency and stability.

In metalworking and fabrication, preheating mitigates thermal gradients and distortion during welding, brazing, or heat treatment. Materials such as steel may be heated to specific temperatures prior to forming or processing to improve ductility and reduce cracking. In ceramics and glass industries, preheating helps remove moisture and reduces thermal shock during forming and forming-related processes.

In electronics, energy storage, and chemical processing, preheating or conditioning components and reactants can lead to more uniform temperatures, predictable reaction rates, and improved performance or safety. This includes preparing battery packs, reactors, or catalysts for operation.

Common methods of preheating include electric heating elements, gas burners, steam or hot-air systems, and heat exchangers. Insulation and temperature-control systems (thermostats or PID controllers) are often used to maximize efficiency and safety.
