Fortificação refers to the construction of defensive structures or systems designed to protect a place, area, or force from attack. Throughout history, fortifications have taken many forms, evolving with military technology and strategic thinking. Early examples include simple earthworks, palisades, and hill forts, designed to provide a physical barrier and a vantage point. The development of siege warfare led to the construction of more robust fortifications.

With the advent of gunpowder artillery, medieval castles with their tall, thin walls proved vulnerable. This led to the development of the bastion fort, or trace italienne, characterized by thick, sloped walls, angled bastions projecting outwards, and a complex network of ditches and ramparts. These designs aimed to deflect cannon fire and provide flanking enfilade fire to attackers. Modern fortifications continue this principle, incorporating concrete, steel, and advanced camouflage, often integrated with extensive trench systems and underground complexes. The purpose remains consistent: to channel the enemy, create kill zones, and preserve the defending force. The term can also extend to naval fortifications, such as coastal batteries, or even conceptual fortifications in areas like cybersecurity.
