Formkonstruktion is the engineering and craft of designing and assembling formworks or molds used to shape fresh materials into a desired geometry. The most common application is concrete casting, where the formwork supports the material while it cures, but similar principles apply to metals, plastics, and composite materials.

Formwork consists of a frame, panels, and connecting elements that create a temporary cavity; components may be timber, plywood, steel, aluminum, or fibre-reinforced polymer, selected for strength, reuse potential, weight, and surface finish. Typical formwork systems include traditional timber forms; modular and reusable steel or aluminum forms; stay-in-place or permanent formwork; as well as fast-deploying slip- or climbing formwork for vertical elements.

Safety and structural stability are central: formwork must resist hydrostatic loads from liquid mixtures, live loads during construction, and bracing against wind and vibration; design follows codes and standards, and form release agents may be used to aid stripping.

Workflow usually spans concept and detailing in design software, fabrication of panels, erection on site with supports, alignment and bracing checks, concrete placement, curing, and stripping for reuse.

Key considerations include surface quality, tolerances, reuse lifecycle, material waste, cost, and environmental impact; choosing the right system depends on geometry, batch size, schedule, and access constraints.
