Forliksrådsmedlem refers to a member of a Forliksråd, which translates to a conciliation board or mediation council in Norway. These boards are a fundamental part of the Norwegian legal system, serving as the first instance for most civil disputes. The primary role of a Forliksråd is to attempt to resolve disputes between individuals or entities through mediation and conciliation before they proceed to a formal court.

Each Forliksråd is composed of three members and two deputies, elected by the local municipality. The members are typically laypeople, not necessarily legal professionals, chosen for their good judgment and understanding of the community. This lay composition is intended to make the process more accessible and less intimidating for those involved.

The conciliation board handles a wide range of civil matters, including debt collection, property disputes, neighborly disagreements, and certain family law issues. When a case is brought before the Forliksråd, the members will listen to both parties, explore the issues, and try to find a mutually acceptable solution.
