Common symptoms of a digestive infection include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, nausea, and sometimes fever and headache. Dehydration is a significant concern, especially in young children and the elderly, due to fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea.

Diagnosis is typically based on the patient's symptoms and medical history. In some cases, stool samples may be tested to identify the specific pathogen. Treatment primarily focuses on preventing dehydration by encouraging the intake of fluids and electrolytes. Rest is also important for recovery. In cases of bacterial infections, antibiotics may be prescribed, although they are not effective against viral causes. Prevention involves good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, and ensuring food is properly cooked and handled.
