Folyadékegyensúlyra, commonly referred to as fluid balance, is a critical physiological state maintained by the body. It refers to the delicate equilibrium between the amount of fluid entering the body and the amount of fluid leaving it. Fluid intake primarily occurs through drinking water and other beverages, as well as the water content of food. Fluid output happens through various pathways such as urination, perspiration, respiration, and defecation. The body has sophisticated regulatory mechanisms to ensure that these inputs and outputs remain relatively constant. Hormones like antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and aldosterone play significant roles in controlling water reabsorption in the kidneys, thereby influencing urine output. Thirst serves as a primary behavioral cue prompting fluid intake when the body senses dehydration.

Disruptions to fluid balance can lead to either dehydration (fluid deficit) or overhydration (fluid excess). Dehydration can result from insufficient intake, excessive loss through sweating or vomiting, or certain medical conditions. Symptoms can range from mild thirst and dry mouth to severe confusion and organ damage. Overhydration, though less common, can occur with excessive water intake or impaired kidney function, leading to conditions like hyponatremia where sodium levels in the blood become dangerously low. Maintaining proper fluid balance is paramount for overall health and well-being.
