The flugelhorn is a brass instrument in the valved bugle family. It has the same valve system and tubing length as a trumpet, but its conical bore, which widens from the mouthpiece to the bell, gives it a mellower, darker tone compared to the brighter sound of the trumpet. The flugelhorn is typically pitched in B♭, like the trumpet, meaning it sounds a major ninth lower than written. Its name is derived from the German word "flügel," meaning wing, possibly referring to the instrument's origins as a cavalry horn or its wing-shaped bell.

While visually similar to a trumpet, the flugelhorn is distinguished by its larger bell flare and often a more curved shape. It is commonly used in jazz ensembles, concert bands, and orchestras. In jazz, it is particularly favored for its warm, lyrical sound, often employed for ballads and solos. The flugelhorn's mouthpiece is also generally deeper and more rounded than a trumpet's, contributing to its characteristic tone. Despite its similar fingering to the trumpet, the embouchure and breath control required to produce the flugelhorn's distinct sound are different.
