Flatstål, or flat steel bar, is a steel product with a rectangular cross-section. It is produced in hot-rolled form for general use, and can also be cold-finished for improved surface quality and tighter tolerances. Flatstål is used across engineering, construction, and manufacturing for components that require a flat, straight profile and good machinability.

Materials and finishes vary. The most common form is carbon mild steel, but flatstål is also available in stainless steel and various alloy grades. Finishes range from mill finish to cold-finished surfaces, with additional options such as galvanized coating or surface treatments for corrosion resistance.

Sizes and tolerances depend on the material and production method. Flatstål is available in a range of thicknesses and widths, with widths typically larger than thickness. Common practical ranges include a few millimeters up to several tens of millimeters in thickness, and widths from a few tens to a couple of hundred millimeters. Lengths are commonly supplied in standard stock lengths (for example around 6 meters) and cut to required dimensions by order.

Applications for flatstål include structural members, brackets, machine frames, gussets, supports, and various machined components. Its rectangular cross-section provides good torsional stiffness and ease of machining, drilling, and welding. Compared with round bar, flatstål offers greater surface contact for flanges and plates, and is often preferred when surface area or flat mating surfaces are important.

Standards and supply vary by region and grade, with producers offering material certified to relevant national or international specifications.
