Flatamounts are a type of geological landform characterized by a large, relatively flat-topped elevation that rises abruptly from the surrounding landscape. They are often isolated features, distinct from mountain ranges or plateaus. The sides of a flatamount are typically steep and may be sheer cliffs.

The formation of flatamounts can be attributed to several geological processes. One common mechanism involves erosion. Rivers or glaciers may erode away softer surrounding rock, leaving a more resistant caprock layer intact. This caprock protects the underlying material, leading to the formation of the flat-topped structure. Volcanic activity can also create flatamounts. Lava flows that spread out and solidify over time can create extensive, flat-lying surfaces. Subsequent erosion can then isolate these features.

Flatamounts are found in various regions around the world. Examples include mesas and buttes, which are smaller versions of flatamounts, often found in arid or semi-arid environments where erosion is a dominant force. In some cases, flatamounts can also be remnants of ancient lava flows or uplifted sedimentary layers. Their distinctive shapes make them visually striking landmarks.
