Flamencogitarspill refers to the practice and performance of flamenco guitar. It is a central element of flamenco, a musical tradition from Andalusia that emerged from Gypsy, Moorish, and regional Spanish influences. The guitar accompanies cante (singing) and baile (dance) or functions as a solo instrument, shaping rhythm, color, and emotion through technique and tone.

Flamenco guitars are typically nylon‑string instruments, sometimes fitted with a golpeador and a capodastro. The playing emphasizes compás, the rhythmic cycle underlying many palos, and a percussive, expressive feel. Common techniques include rasgueado, picado, tremolo, golpe, and alzapúa, with the right hand producing rapid, articulate accents and the left hand providing bass lines and color.

Flamenco guitar forms are linked to palos or song-dance styles, each with a distinct tempo and compás. Well-known palos include soleá, siguiriyas, bulerías, alegrías, fandangos, tangos, and guajiras. Guitarists may accompany singers and dancers within these frames or improvise within them, balancing strict rhythm with expressive phrasing.

Historically important players include Sabicas, Paco de Lucía, Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, and Manolo Sanlúcar. In later decades, flamenco guitar expanded technically and stylistically, incorporating jazz, folk, and contemporary ideas while preserving the tradition’s emphasis on rhythm and emotion. Training often involves tutelage with maestros and study of palo forms, compás, and repertoire.
