Fjærtypene (feather types) refer to the various structures and functions of feathers found in birds, each adapted for specific purposes such as flight, insulation, camouflage, or display. These feathers can be broadly classified into several categories based on their morphology and role.

Primærfjær (primary feathers) are located on the wing's outer edge and are essential for flight propulsion. They are typically stiff and asymmetrical, providing the aerodynamic surface needed during flight. Sekundærfjær (secondary feathers) are attached closer to the bird's body on the wing's inner part and help generate lift. These feathers are usually more symmetrical and flexible.

Resfjær (down feathers) are soft, fluffy, and densely packed, primarily serving as insulation to maintain body heat. These feathers lack the stiff central rachis seen in other feather types, making them ideal for trapping air close to the bird's skin. Vingerfjær (coverts) are smaller feathers that overlay and protect the flight feathers, contributing to smooth airflow over the wings and aiding in insulation.

Dekorative fjær (also known as ornamental or display feathers) often have vivid colors or elaborate patterns used in courtship displays or territorial signals.
