Fjellfjords are a distinct geographical feature found in mountainous coastal regions. They are essentially fjords that originate in higher elevations and extend down into the sea, often carving steep, dramatic valleys through the landscape. As they descend, they typically widen and become more similar to traditional fjords as they meet the coastline. The marine ecosystems within fjellfjords can be influenced by the unique environmental conditions, including cold, nutrient-rich waters from glacial melt and the sheltered, deep basins. Examples of regions where fjellfjords are found include parts of Norway, Greenland, and Alaska, where the interplay of glaciation and mountainous terrain has created these striking natural formations.
