Fistulas and abscesses are distinct but often related medical conditions that involve abnormal formations and collections of pus within the body.

An abscess is a localized collection of pus that builds up within a tissue or organ. Pus is a thick fluid containing dead white blood cells, bacteria, and cellular debris, which forms as the body's immune system fights off an infection. Abscesses can occur anywhere in the body and often present as a swollen, painful, red, and warm area. Common causes include bacterial infections, but they can also arise from other pathogens or foreign bodies. Treatment typically involves draining the pus and administering antibiotics.

A fistula is an abnormal passageway or tract that connects two hollow organs or a hollow organ to the surface of the body. Fistulas can form as a complication of an untreated or inadequately treated abscess. When an abscess does not fully resolve or when it erodes through tissue, it can create a tunnel that connects to another area. Symptoms of a fistula depend on its location but can include drainage of pus or other bodily fluids from an unusual opening, pain, and recurrent infections. Examples include anal fistulas, which connect the anal canal to the skin near the anus, or gastrocolic fistulas, which connect the stomach to the colon. Treatment often requires surgical intervention to close the abnormal passage.
