The term "firmware" itself suggests a hybrid nature, being "firm" in its permanence compared to the easily changeable nature of "software." This immutability is a key characteristic, as firmware is usually stored in non-volatile memory like ROM (Read-Only Memory) or flash memory, meaning it retains its data even when the power is turned off. This ensures that the device can start up and function as intended immediately upon being powered on.

Firmware is found in a vast array of electronic devices, from simple appliances like microwaves and remote controls to complex systems such as routers, smartphones, graphics cards, and even the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) on computers. Updates to firmware, often referred to as firmware flashes or upgrades, are released by manufacturers to fix bugs, improve performance, add new features, or patch security vulnerabilities. However, improper firmware updates can potentially render a device inoperable, a situation sometimes referred to as "bricking."
