Filtersoften is a term used to describe a class of compact water treatment devices that combine filtration and softening in a single unit. These systems are designed to remove particulates and reduce water hardness in one pass, providing softened water with low turbidity for household or light industrial use.

Operation typically relies on a multi-media bed or a sequence of media cartridges. Water first passes through a sediment filter to remove suspended solids, then through a softening medium that exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium ions. Regeneration of the softening medium is automatic in most designs and is initiated by time or differential pressure, using a brine solution or similar regenerant.

Advantages include a smaller footprint, simplified installation, and potentially lower total cost of ownership for small facilities, since filtration and softening are performed together. The technology can provide more stable water chemistry downstream and reduce scaling in equipment that is sensitive to hardness.

Limitations include lower maximum flow compared with dedicated softeners, resin fouling from iron or manganese, and salt-based regeneration requirements. Filtersoften units may require pretreatment for aggressive organic contaminants and periodic replacement of filter cartridges or resin. They are typically most suitable for potable water supplies with moderate hardness and low iron content.

Development and deployment of filtersoften products began in the early 2000s as a response to space and cost constraints in small-scale water treatment. They remain a niche option, with ongoing research into resin formulations and media blends aimed at improving fouling resistance and regeneration efficiency.
