Filtermiddel is a term used in filtration technology to describe materials that aid the separation of solids from liquids. It can refer to filter media, which form the filtration bed, and to filter aids, which are added to improve filtration performance. Filter aids are typically removed with the solids, while filter media remain as part of the filtration system.

Common filter media include silica sand, anthracite, activated carbon, and cellulose-based materials. Filter aids used to enhance filtration performance include diatomaceous earth (diatomite), perlite, cellulose fibers, and bentonite clay. In many processes, a precoat of filter aid is applied to the filter surface to improve clarity and extend the life of the filter cake.

How filtermiddel works varies by type. A precoat or depth filtration layer traps finer particles, reduces clogging, and increases filtration rate. The combination of a stable filter bed with an added filter aid can produce clearer filtrate and protect downstream equipment, such as membranes, from fouling.

Applications are widespread. Filtermiddel is used in drinking water and wastewater treatment, the food and beverage industry (including brewing and juice clarification), pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and sugar refining. It is also employed in laboratory filtration for removal of fine solids.

Selection considerations include chemical compatibility with the liquid, temperature, pH, particle size distribution, and regulatory requirements. Safety concerns focus on dust generation during handling, particularly for diatomaceous earth, calling for appropriate ventilation and protective equipment. Disposal of spent filter aid and used media must comply with local waste regulations.
