Filterklasser are categories of filters defined by their intended function and behavior in a system. They group filters that share similar frequency or component-removal characteristics, regardless of the exact implementation. The concept helps engineers and researchers select appropriate solutions for signal processing, data handling, or media treatment.

Classification of filterklasser typically relies on several criteria. A primary dimension is frequency response: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-stop (notch). Attenuation requirements, passband fidelity, and phase characteristics further distinguish classes. Implementation is another axis: filters can be analog or digital, and within these there are first-order or higher-order designs, as well as FIR (finite impulse response) and IIR (infinite impulse response) types. The physical medium or domain also matters: electronic filters (RC, LC, op-amp), optical and acoustic filters, or fluid-based filters used in filtration systems.

In practice, examples of filterklasser include electronic low-pass filters used to remove high-frequency noise, digital FIR/IIR filters employed in audio and communication systems, and specialized filtration media such as rapid sand filters in water treatment. The selection of a filterklasse depends on the required attenuation in the stopband, the acceptable distortion of the passband, latency constraints, and practical considerations such as size, cost, and power.
