The filterkammer, translated as “filter chamber,” is a sealed compartment within a filtration device designed to hold filter media and guide the flow of liquid through it. The chamber is a core component of filtration stages that remove particulates and provide surface area for beneficial microorganisms.

Inside the filterkammer, water moves from inlet to outlet, traversing one or more media types. Mechanical media such as foams or sponges capture solids; biological media such as ceramic rings or bio-balls provide habitat for nitrifying bacteria; chemical media like activated carbon or ion-exchange resins may be used in separate sections to remove dissolved substances.

Applications include aquarium canister and inline filters, pond filtration systems, and industrial or laboratory water treatment units. In home aquaria, the chambers are designed with removable trays to facilitate cleaning and media replacement, and may be arranged in multiple stages to separate mechanical, biological, and chemical processes.

Maintenance involves regular rinsing or replacement of mechanical media, periodic replacement of chemical media, and inspection of seals to prevent leaks. To preserve beneficial bacteria, avoid excessive disruption of biological media and maintain a stable flow.

Design considerations include chamber size, the number of chambers, media compatibility, and required flow rate. A well-designed filterkammer balances filtration efficiency with ease of maintenance and reliable operation.
