A filter circuit, also known as an electronic filter, is an electrical circuit that passes electrical signals within a certain range of frequencies and blocks or attenuates signals outside that range. Filter circuits are fundamental building blocks in many electronic systems, used for signal processing, noise reduction, and frequency selection. They are employed in applications ranging from audio systems to telecommunications and biomedical devices.

The behavior of a filter circuit is defined by its frequency response, which describes how the circuit affects signals at different frequencies. Filters are typically categorized by the range of frequencies they allow to pass. The most common types include low-pass filters, which allow low frequencies to pass while attenuating high frequencies; high-pass filters, which allow high frequencies to pass while attenuating low frequencies; band-pass filters, which allow frequencies within a specific band to pass while attenuating frequencies outside that band; and band-stop filters (or notch filters), which attenuate frequencies within a specific band while allowing others to pass.

Filter circuits can be implemented using passive components such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors. These are known as passive filters. Alternatively, active filters utilize active components like operational amplifiers in addition to passive components. Active filters can provide gain, sharper frequency rolloffs, and are not subject to the same loading effects as passive filters, but they require a power supply. The design of a filter circuit involves selecting appropriate component values and circuit topologies to achieve the desired frequency response characteristics, such as cutoff frequency and selectivity.
