Fijnstofdeeltjes, also known as particulate matter (PM), are tiny particles suspended in the air. They are categorized by their size, with the most commonly discussed being PM10 (particles with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less) and PM2.5 (particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less). These particles are so small that they are invisible to the naked eye.

Fijnstofdeeltjes originate from a variety of sources, both natural and anthropogenic. Natural sources include dust storms, volcanic eruptions, and sea spray. Human activities are a significant contributor, with combustion processes being a primary source. This includes emissions from vehicles, industrial facilities, power plants, and residential heating, especially the burning of wood and coal. Agricultural activities, such as plowing and livestock farming, also generate fine dust.

They can also deposit on surfaces, damaging buildings and vegetation. Monitoring and reducing fine particle emissions are thus crucial for improving air quality and protecting human health.
