Fieldtermination refers to the deliberate cessation or control of a field at a boundary in electromagnetics and electrical engineering, with the goal of preventing unwanted propagation, reflection, or interference. It encompasses boundary conditions and devices that absorb, redirect, or impedance-match the field to the surrounding medium, so energy does not reflect back into the source region.

Techniques used to achieve field termination include: matched terminations, where a load is chosen to equal the characteristic impedance of the transmission medium; reactive terminations that cancel reflections at a target frequency through inductive or capacitive elements; and absorptive terminations using lossy materials such as ferrites or lossy dielectrics. In waveguides and coaxial systems, proper terminations are essential to minimize standing waves; computational methods employ absorbing boundaries, such as perfectly matched layers, to simulate open space.

Applications span high-frequency signal integrity, test and measurement setups, RF and microwave design, antenna systems, radar, medical imaging, and accelerator technology. Field termination is also a consideration in optical systems, where impedance matching and anti-reflection strategies reduce stray reflections at interfaces.
