Fibrose refers to the abnormal formation of fibrous connective tissue in an organ or tissue. This process, known as fibrosis, is a common response to injury or inflammation, and it can occur in nearly any organ of the body. The excess fibrous tissue replaces normal tissue, leading to a thickening and stiffening of the affected area. This can impair the organ's function.

The causes of fibrose are varied and can include chronic infections, autoimmune diseases, exposure to toxins, and genetic predispositions. For example, liver fibrosis is often associated with viral hepatitis or alcohol abuse, while lung fibrosis can be caused by inhaling certain dusts or by autoimmune conditions. The progression of fibrose can range from mild to severe, depending on the underlying cause and the extent of tissue damage.

Diagnosis of fibrose typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of the fibrosis. Treatment strategies aim to address the underlying cause of the fibrose and slow or halt the progression of scarring. While some fibrotic conditions can be reversed if caught early, advanced fibrosis often leads to irreversible organ damage and can necessitate organ transplantation.
