This combination of fibrous and cartilaginous elements gives fibrokartilaginøs tissue a unique set of properties, making it resilient and capable of withstanding significant tension and compression.

This tissue is found in several locations throughout the body where strong, somewhat flexible support is needed. Prominent examples include the intervertebral discs, which cushion the vertebrae of the spine and allow for movement. It is also a key component of the menisci in the knee joint, acting as shock absorbers and stabilizers. Other areas where fibrokartilaginøs tissue is present are the pubic symphysis, which connects the two halves of the pelvis, and the articular discs found in certain joints like the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint). The structure of fibrokartilaginøs tissue, with its interlacing collagen bundles and chondrocytes dispersed within the matrix, is well-suited for these load-bearing and shock-absorbing roles. Its histological appearance is distinct, showing larger, more densely packed collagen fibers compared to hyaline cartilage, and often a less abundant matrix.
