The primary cell type in fibrocartilage is the chondrocyte, which resides within lacunae. These cells are responsible for synthesizing and maintaining the extracellular matrix, which is rich in type I and type II collagen fibers. The arrangement of these collagen bundles is often irregular, contributing to the tissue's resilience and ability to resist tensile stress.

Fibrocartilage is found in several key locations within the body where such properties are essential. It forms the intervertebral discs, acting as shock absorbers between the vertebrae of the spine. It is also a crucial component of menisci in the knee joint, aiding in joint stability and load distribution. Other examples include the labrum of the hip and shoulder joints, as well as the pubic symphysis. Damage to fibrocartilage, such as a torn meniscus, can lead to pain, instability, and reduced joint function due to its limited capacity for self-repair.
