Fiberrötter, also known as fibrous roots, are a type of root system that is characterized by a dense mass of thin, branching roots that originate from the base of the stem. Unlike taproot systems, which have a single, dominant main root, fibrous root systems lack a prominent central root. Instead, they consist of numerous secondary roots that grow horizontally and spread out, forming a tangled network.

This type of root system is commonly found in monocotyledonous plants, such as grasses, grains, and many ornamental flowers. The fibrous structure provides a large surface area for absorption of water and nutrients from the soil. The extensive spread of the roots also helps to anchor the plant firmly, preventing erosion and providing stability, especially in plants like grasses that grow in loose soil.

The shallow nature of many fibrous root systems means they are well-suited to efficiently take up moisture from the upper layers of the soil, which is particularly advantageous in environments with frequent rainfall or moist soil conditions. The rapid growth and extensive branching of fiberrötter allow plants to quickly establish themselves and compete for resources. Their dense matting also plays a role in soil structure, improving aeration and water infiltration.
