In everyday language fertőtlenítés is used to describe disinfection, while more technical contexts may distinguish it from sterilization, sanitization, or antisepsis. The form ferttlenít is commonly seen as a misspelling or informal variant of fertőtlenítés.

Differences from related concepts are important. Disinfection aims to inactivate or destroy most pathogens but does not necessarily kill all microorganisms or spores. Sterilization, by contrast, is a more stringent process intended to destroy all forms of life, including bacterial spores.
